Star wars ralph mcquarrie limited edition lithograph

To commemorate the event, Dreams and Visions Press has produced a limited edition page, 8. Limited to only 1, copies, it's the perfect keepsake to relive your memories of this very special gallery exhibit.

Also available exclusively in the gallery are 10" x 20" prints of twelve of Ralph's production paintings from The Empire Strikes Back 10 images which have never been reproduced at that size; none of which have ever been reproduced in the Metallix format. Matching numbered sets will be available while supplies last, however we anticipate these prints will sell quickly once fans see how beautifully the reproductions turned out.

Measuring a whopping 22" x This huge rendition of his iconic Bounty Hunters painting is destined to be the centerpiece of a very small number of Ralph McQuarrie's fan's collections. Last but not least, on each day of the show we will be handing out our free Art of Ralph McQuarrie trading cards, with photos of Ralph working behind the scenes on The Empire Strikes Back on the front, and the backs forming a puzzle of Ralph's famous Yoda painting.

You'll be able to collect all nine by stopping by our booth in the exhibit hall as well as the art gallery on each day of the show, while supplies last. We're looking forward to catching up with old friends and seeing plenty of new faces in Orlando! It can't be any hotter or more humid than Japan was, right? As with prior Celebrations, we invite you to stop by the booth and sign a guest book for Ralph so you can send him your well wishes directly.

We see stormtroopers wielding shields, a different character design for Chewbacca and, most notably, a lightsaber serving as a standard issue weapon not one reserved for only Jedi Knights. In contrast with science fiction films of the time, which imagined the future and distant worlds as sterile utopias, Lucas and McQuarrie showed audiences a world that had its own history and had its own character.

In a stark divergence from the streamlined and efficient Imperials, McQuarrie emphasized how the Rebels needed to relocate to evade the Empire, making their hangars functional more than fashionable. In , Star Wars showed us desert planets, forest bases, and nefarious space stations, but The Empire Strikes Back gave the filmmakers an opportunity to showcase just how vast and diverse the galaxy was, not just in environments but also in characters.

Originally intended to be the gas planet Alderaan, McQuarrie envisioned a sophisticated society that hovered above a planet instead of inhabiting it.

McQuarrie proved time and time again that not only could he work with Lucas to create fantastical creatures and environments, but he also had a firm grasp on the art of filmmaking, using angles and perspectives to help exhibit awesome action in a static image.

In the 16 years I knew Ralph, and particularly during the period when we were working on The Art of Ralph McQuarrie Dreams and Visions Press, , we had several opportunities to speak at length about those original paintings, and the Ballantine portfolio that introduced so many of us to Ralph and his work.

He often said that had he known, he would have tried to put more of a polish on them as if they needed it. Unfortunately, despite the claim of the finest stock being used, the initial print run of the portfolio was plagued with problems. Having seen first-hand hundreds, if not thousands, of the individual prints that Ralph signed throughout the years at shows and later from his home, I can attest to the fact that the printing quality varied greatly from one print to the next, with inconsistent colors and numerous flaws.

While Ralph was rarely one to complain, when word got back to Judy Lynn Del Rey that there was some concern with the quality of the reproduction of the art, not only were whole pallets of the initial printing of portfolios destroyed, she had Ralph flown out to oversee a new printing of the portfolios. As a result, while still facing the limitations of a mass-produced item, the second printing of the portfolio features a much higher quality reproduction of the artwork.

Ralph completed his first Star Wars production painting of the droids in the desert at the end of January, The original version featured a much more human face on C-3PO, as well as a different torso. John Barry suggested the round eyes that gave Threepio his astonished look, and Ralph felt that finally completed the character. In the portfolio, Wikarska notes that Ralph used photo reference from the Oregon coast for the background, but many fans have since recognized that backdrop as Morro rock, in Morro Bay California.

It was because of this scene that Darth Vader came to have the look that he does. Ralph, concerned that Vader was jumping from ship to ship through the vacuum of space, felt that he would require some sort of breathing apparatus.

George agreed, and the look of the masked villain was born. Log in Register. Search only containers. Search titles only. Search Advanced search…. New posts.
