At the onset of the Second World War, Lutheran theologian Bonhoeffer declined to go into exile in America, preferring to oppose the nationalist and racist views of National Socialism. In April he was arrested and imprisoned for his alleged part in a plot to kill Hitler. He was executed in Flossenburg concentration camp in April , by which time the Third Reich was obviously doomed.
